UNESCO: Azerbaijan participated at the 16th Session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage

The 16th session of the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage was held on December 13-18, 2021.

Azerbaijan participated in the meeting as the Committee member and our country was represented by the Permanent Delegate to UNESCO Elman Abdullayev and the staff of our delegation.

About 900 participants from around the world registered for the 16th session of the Committee, which was held online under the chairmanship of the Secretary-General of the Sri Lankan National Commission for UNESCO Punchi Nilame Megaswate.

The session considered the elements nominated by the member states for inclusion in the relevant lists, 48 ​​elements were nominated for inclusion in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, and 6 elements – in the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding.

At the same time, 5 proposals for inclusion in the register of good protection practices put forward by Djibouti, Mongolia and Timor-Leste and 3 requests for international assistance in the amount of more than 100 thousand US dollars were on the Agenda.

The meeting also heard periodic reports on the implementation of the Convention in Latin America and the Caribbean, the report of the Intangible Cultural Heritage – NGO Forum, and considered issues such as reforms in the census mechanisms of the 2003 Convention.

Speaking at the session, Permanent Delegate to UNESCO, Ambassador Elman Abdullayev said that despite the COVID-19 pandemic, our country welcomes the efforts of the Secretariat of the 2003 Convention and the Culture Sector that continued their work. Satisfaction was expressed with the measures taken by the Secretariat to support the main mechanisms, operational activities and programs of the Committee.

He noted that in accordance with the implementation of the strategy to strengthen UNESCO's activities for the protection of culture and the promotion of cultural pluralism, Azerbaijan applauds the Secretariat's progress in the protection of intangible cultural heritage in emergencies, as well as in armed conflicts and natural disasters.

As a result of the session, 43 elements were included in the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
